In 2024, we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program. Originating in Pineville, Kentucky, in 1974, WIC has evolved into the preeminent public health initiative in the United States. Over the past five decades, WIC has been instrumental in furnishing essential nutrition, breastfeeding assistance, and educational resources to families of moderate to low income nationwide.
The National WIC Association (NWA) serves as the leading nonprofit representative for the 12,000 public health nutrition service provider agencies and the more than 6.3 million mothers, infants, and young children benefiting from the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). Through offering education, counsel, and backing to WIC personnel, the NWA fosters innovation and advocacy efforts aimed at fortifying WIC’s impact in fostering healthier families across the country.
An integral component of the NWA’s mission is its annual conference, convening representatives from the USDA, state and local agencies, industry professionals, and advocates. This gathering facilitates the exchange of the latest developments, research findings, and exemplary approaches within the WIC program. At this event, the NWA confers its esteemed Leadership Awards to individuals and entities exemplifying outstanding leadership across various domains, including WIC advocacy, program bolstering, equity promotion, and research advancement.
In recognition of its remarkable dedication to health equity within the WIC community, the Lundquist WIC Program proudly received the 2024 NWA Health Equity Champion Agency Award for a State or Local WIC Agency.
